50th Anniversary

'Celebration' was the theme for the Helensburgh Orchestral Society's recent concert in the Victoria Halls as the event marked the fiftieth anniversary of the orchestra's very first concert in 1958. The programme conducted by Robert Baxter included one of the pieces from that original concert, Grieg's 'Norwegian Dances'. Also included was the Second Symphony of Sibelius. In addition, the orchestra celebrated its traditions of playing new work and providing the opportunity for a concerto performance by a young soloist. 'Thyme' by Mike Norris received its first performance and Helena Gourd played Mozart's Flute Concerto in D, both being received with great enthusiasm by the capacity audience.

With Provost Petrie, local MP Alan Reid and other dignitaries present, together with special guests including former conductors and members and representatives of the many musical organisations in the area, this was a highly successful and thoroughly enjoyable event. As the Provost said at the post-concert reception, Helensburgh and the musical life of the whole area have much to celebrate. A major strength of the orchestra is that it draws its membership of almost 60 from a wide area and from a range of ages from teens to third age, united in the pleasure and democracy of music in which ability and enthusiasm are all that counts.

To mark the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the orchestra's very first concert in 1958 we have published a booklet which tells the story of the orchestra from its foundation to the present day. It also serves as an excellent reminder of achievements past and present. We have a limited number of copies available for purchase, priced minimum donation of £5 plus £1.50 p&p - cheques made payable to Helensburgh Orchestral Society.
